"In Pieces"
Being a household name by the time of the release of 1993's In Pieces.
Garth Brooks has combined country into a pop style, likewise traditional Country.
Where in future years, Country would have a much more Pop style in sound, likewise
the traditional Country sound. Most critics and fans may argue that Pop should
not be mixed with Country, yet In Pieces does have its fine Country sounding
moments, as Garth Brooks has always been popular with country fans and critics
alike, in either both sounding pop and/or country.
The true Country sound is outstanding on such songs as "American
Honky-Tonk Bar Association," "Ain't Goin' Down (Til The Sun Comes Up)"
and "Callin' Baton Rouge." "Kickin' And Screamin' combines country
with a blues touch -- where it definitely sounds country, the extra-added
blues style makes the song well worthwhile.
The ballads also stand out on this release -- "The Cowboy Song"
definitely has the true Country style, with its classic country-sounding
guitars, violins, and Brooks' distinctive voice. "The Red Strokes"
is another good country ballad, yet an outstanding ballad is "One Night
A Day," a song that is very enjoyable, and is probably the best ballad
on this release.
Mixing both Country and Pop styles is heard on such songs as "The
Night I Called The Old Man Out," and an outlaw-type sound is heard on
the country-mixed-wtih-pop "The Night Will Only Know," another
interesting song (like many others) which will get repeated listens.
In Pieces has no missing "pieces" at all -- it's a fine Country
album, that should get repeated listens throughout. There isn't a bad song
on this release, as many of Garth Brooks' albums have always been entertaining.
It does have a more Country sound than Pop on most of the tunes here, and
the mix of Country with Pop does make the album flow freely. Garth Brooks
is a country legend, and this album is a good start for those who are not quite
familiar with his music. Brooks was already at his peak by 1993, and this album
proves it.
