"Flesh Of My Flesh Blood Of My Blood"

From the pages of Billboard Magazine's Hot 200 Album Charts:
DMX's 2nd album to reach the #1 position on the Hot 200 occurred in 1998, with Flesh Of My Flesh, Blood Of My Blood. Out of curiousity, since DMX's music is hard-core rap, it was most likely that his music was not played on Top 40 Radio. After listening to it, from start to finish, I must admit, this is a well-done release, the lyrics being blunt and straightforward, and the music is energized and funky.

Great funky beats are heard on such songs as "My Niggas," "Bring Your Whole Crew." "Pac Man" is spoken voice, and at the end, the sound of a gunshot is heard. "Ain't No Way" returns the agressive lyrics and funky beats. With titles such as "We Don't Give A Fuck," this song may not be as "entertaining," compared to other songs here, yet it has the aggressive and blunt lyrics throughout. "Keep Your Shit The Hardest," is better, and "Coming From" (with the help from Mary J. Blige) defines today's Hip-Hop Rap (DMX) mixed with a touch of Soul (Blige).

The sampling of Ini Kamoze's "Here Comes The Hotstepper" and DMX's unique lyrics concerning sex has "It's All Good" clearly defining it's title -- It IS All Good. "The Omen" is as mysterious as it's title. It's hypnotizing rhythms and devilish lyrics has the listener glued to the speakers for more. "Slippin'" is moody in sound, yet its smooth rhythms and energetic lyrics continues the high rating of this release.

"No Love 4 Me" is fast, jumpin' and funkin'. "Dogs For Life" is smooth rhythmically, where "Blackout" returns the aggressive lyrics as well as the title track, and "Heat." "Ready To Meet Him" features a very inspiring poem at the beginning, and despite the violence in today's world, we learn to live everyday with God's guidance and positive living.

Flesh Of My Flesh, Blood Of My Blood" is an album of energy with its energetic rhythms, and powerful, aggressive lyrics of sex and violence. Today's hard-core rap does consist of these two sources that the media has overpowered in today's society. DMX can be compared to the late Tupac Shakur, both musically and lyrically. DMX has the raw power and energy in this album, that despite the messages portrayed in the lyrics, it definitely alert your attention to today's ever-changing world. The lyrics may be offensive to many, yet it is how DMX best describes his messages across in his songs. Flesh Of My Flesh, Blood Of My Blood should be listened to with an open mind, and try to understand how and why DMX portrays his image through his music. Music is best to show how one feels about the world or anything else in general. DMX shows his expressions in music the best ways he can, through his eyes, and his experiences.
