Eric Burdon & War "Eric Burdon Declares War"
By 1970, Eric Burdon had been a popular name with his band, The Animals.
He was looking for a new direction, as he discovered a band by the name of War,
are mostly his standouts, however on this album, Satriani provides vocals to
and on his first solo attempt, they released Eric Burdon Declares War.
From this album, their most popular hit "Spill The Wine" surfaced, and
the remaining songs consisted of close to 10 minute (or more) songs, mixing a
blend of Rock, R&B and Soul. Only 5 songs on this
A little bit of gospel and R&B best describes the opening track, "Thel
Vision Of Rassan." The popular '60s song "Tobacco Road" is here,
as it is added with the funky "I Have A Dream", as Burdon incorporates
a storyline (as heard on "Spill The Wine" accompanied with a funky beat
music background. "Rules For Memphis Slim" returns a with the storyline
Burdon with a 5 song medley consisting of "Birth, Mother Earth, Mr. Charlie,
Danish Pastry, Mother Earth." The background music has a cool Blues feel,
as dedicated to blues artist Memphis Slim. The album's closing song, "You're
No Stranger" has a more soulful approach, as this style of music would
later be used when War went on their own without Burdon.
A different approach, yet still providing R&B and Blues, Eric Burdon & War
made a good team effort with their "debut" album together. They would release
3 albums together (one of which already reviewed on the WSVNRadio site --
The Blackman's
Burdon) Burdon left afterwards, and War would have their success on
their own. An interesting journey of Rock, Soul, R&B and Blues, the combination
of Eric Burdon & War is worth a good trip.
