Anne Murray "Anne Murray's Greatest Hits"
Canadian Anne Murray was a very popular singer in the 1970s/1980s. Her
music for the most part is considered Pop, Easy Listening and Country. Having
a more pop sound, many of her songs were #1 on the Country chart, likewise on
the Pop chart. Anne Murray's Greatest Hits features 10 songs,
all easily recognized for those familiar with her music. (Note: Her songs
from her import
Special Collection features more of her Country #1's,
where on the Pop chart, Murray only accomplished 1 number one song.)
Each song is well crafted, and compared to sound, they all have a more
Pop/Easy Listening sound, rather than Country. "You Needed Me" was her
only #1 Pop song, where on the Country chart, 4 songs from this compilation
reached #1: "I Just Fall In Love Again," "Shadows In The Moonlight,"
"Broken Hearted Me," and "Could I Have This Dance." Anne Murray
had ten #1 songs, from 1974-1986; this compilation was released in 1980, as
her import Special Collection has 9 of her 10 #1's.
The songs that did not hit #1 are easily recognized as well, having the 45
rpm "Snowbird" brings back a lot of childhood memories. There are songs
here on this set that were written/recorded by other popular artists: (Kenny)
Loggins & (Jim) Messina's "Danny's Song," The Beatles' "You Won't
See Me" and The Monkees' "Daydream Believer." "A Love Song"
is another recognized song, likewise "I Just Fall In Love Again."
"Shadows In The Moonlight," "Broken Hearted Me" and "Could I Have
This Dance" (not on the Special Collection compilation) all hit #1
on the Country chart in 1979-1980, as many songs from these years from other
artists during these years were crossover hits on both the Pop and Country
charts.
Anne Murray's music is very pleasant, easy to listen to, and relaxing.
Although one #1 Country song didn't appear on the import Special Collection,
Anne Murray's Greatest Hits only accomplished the 1970s decade. How
"Could I Have This Dance" was not included, the other 9 songs are all
on the import. For just a sample of Murray's most popular songs, this
Greateset Hits compilation best defines her music, where most of her
1980s Country #1's may not ring memory bells for some, Anne Murray's
Greatest Hits captures the core of her most popular well-known songs.
