Britney Spears "The Singles Collection"
Just like many "Greatest Hits/Best Of" compilations, an artist's music is put together, with one or more tracks that were never released
previously on their past albums. Therefore, if you're a huge fan, and already have collected the original albums, you're forced to get
the greatest hits/best of. Brtiney Spears' second release of greatest tunes was released in 2009, and included the track "3," which,
like other of her hits, reached #1 on the BIllboard Hot 100 chart. Some of the tracks listed on The Singles Collection are
remixes, but to me, they sound the same (or pretty close) to their originals.
"3" leads off the set, as this new track hit #1. (Surprisingly, Britney had only three #1 songs upon this compilation.) This song was
somewhat "controversial," as the lyrics referred to sexual threesomes, with it's uses of heavy basslines and synthesizers. "Baby One More
Time" would be her first #1, and the title track of her first album. Other tracks from the first album were "(YOu Drive Me) Crazy"
(The Stop Remix), and a more laid back track, "Born To Make You Happy."
From Britney's second album (released in 2000) comes it's title track, "Oops! I Did It Again," which did not reach #1, yet it was a huge hit.
Claiming she was "not innocent," Britney was definitely "growing up." "Stronger" was another track from Oops!, as it was another radio hit.
Her third album, Britney was released in 2001, and from it, comes 2 tracks -- "I'm A Slave 4 U," co-written by Pharrell Williams, and not
by Prince (being that the 2 words "For You" was "4 U" -- a common spelling for Prince). This track could have been written by Prince, with it's Prince-alike
sound. The other track from Britney is "Boys," as it features Pharrell Williams, and this track is "the Co-Ed Remix."
Three tracks emerge from her next album, released in 2003 -- In The Zone. "Me Against The Music" features Madonna. Of course,
everyone remembers the Madonna-Britney kiss on the 2003 VMAs awards. The two divas attempted the kiss in the video of "Me Against The Music."
The kiss was real on the awards show. "Toxic" would be another radio hit, and "Everytime" is from the softer ballad side of Britney.fs
The story on this track was her response to Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me A River." Britney never confirmed this story, as she and Justin had ended
their relationship at this time.
All three released albums by Britney had all reached the #1 position on Billboard's Top 200 albums chart. However, her next album,
released in 2007, Blackout did not reach #1. "Gimme More" created a new catch-phrase: "It's Britney, Bitch." By this time, the media was
"fascinated" with her private life -- Drug rehab, her shaven head, losing custody to her children, a close relative, an aunt, had passed away, and a lawsuit
for one of her videos, for counterfeiting a fashion fabric. Britney's world was crumbling, and the media was all over it. The other track from Blackout
was "Piece Of Me." Both tracks are fair; the latter sounding like another Madonna-ish track.
Speaking of Madonna, the remaining tracks would be from her 2008 release, Circus. The four tracks would achiever her third #1 hit ("Womanizer"),
as the title track would have a more Madonna-ish sound. "If You Seek Amy" and "Radar" are the least favorites to listen to,
(explained more here). Britney was now trying to get her life back on track, as she would try to be a better person, not only
for her children, but getting the media's "positivity" back, and not "highlight" on the "negative issues" going on in her life.
Britney's The Singles Collection was also released as a box set, of 29 individual cds for each of her hits, and B-sides. A DVD was also included.
(Note: Only 17 tracks were released on the one-disc Singles Collection.)
The Singles Collection is WSVNRadio's Album Pick of the Week third album by Britney Spears. The other two were:
Britney, and
Circus.
Like Mariah Carey, both Mariah and Britney's best years in music was in their earlier years (in my own opinion). In Mariah's case, after she worked with Sean Combs
(the artist formerly known as Puff Daddy and P. Diddy), and with Britney, after the Madonna incident. Maybe it's just me, but once the touch of success hits, artists
tend to drive to another area of music, and/pr updating it to the latest musical trends. Britney's Circus sounded more like Madonna, compared to her earlier years
of pulsing basslines and syntehsized music. And her lyrics were on the "growing up" phase, and like Madonna, getting more sexual.
After Britney's downfall/breakdown, she has turned for the best -- appearing on Simon Cowell's U.S. X Factor, and recording more music. Of course, her music
and videos still are sexy and energetic, she still keeps herself in her "sexual image" on full tilt. Her fourth #1 hit was a duet with Rihanna -- "S&M" from Rihanna's
Loud (2011). Two more studio albums were released by Britney: Femme Fatale (2011), in which her fifth #1 hit was achieved -- "Hold It Against Me." Her
latest studio release was in 2013, Britney Jean. This album was released on RCA, as she parted ways with Jive Records, which was the label of all her previous albums.
I think Britney's best years have already passed, yet she still keeps with the trends, and getting her image on the positive, although some may think it just might be too
suggestive, but nowadays, most of all the latest female singers share this same image. Her Legacy has been compared to Madonna and Janet Jackson. She has become a part of
popular Pop Culture, and appealing to the younger crowd. A former Musketeer, she was a female teen favorite when she first emerged on the music scene, and like her other
teen favorites, grew up into an adult woman. One thing for sure, it has never been a dull moment.
For those wanting "the best" of Britney Spears' music, The Singles Collection is a good choice. It has three #1 hits, and other hits and album tracks. A new track,
"3" as well. Britney Spears may not be for everyone, but for those who enjoy upbeat, pulsing music, it's all here on this greatest hits/best of compilation.
