"Back It Up"
The duo of guitarist Robin Trower and his singer James Dewar have recorded increible music as "Robin Trower." The year was 1983.
Trower's studio album of that year was Back It Up. It was after this album that Trower was dropped by Chrysalis Records, due
to no touring to support the album, and to lack of radio airplay. Back It Up would be Dewar's last album with Trower, as
vocalist. Although this occurred, it still remains that his music has always been fantastic. Back It Up is no exception.
The title track is a great rocker, to start off the album. Upon hearing this first track, it's obvious this will be another
good-to-great Robin Trower release. "River" is a basic (and good) Rock track. It keeps getting better, with the "Trower Power"
"Black To Red." Great Rock by Trower, as he always has.
If Jimi Hendrix was alive, (and many have said that Trower would be the "next Hendrix") -- the next two tracks could have been by
Hendrix. "Benny Dancer" has the Hendrix Blues, as Jimi was experimenting with before his death. Likewise, the familiar Hendrix
Rock can be compared, on "Time Is Short."
"Islands" -- This is what you think of when you hear this track; a great instrumental. James Dewar and Robin Trower do what
they've always done, their best, as this is heard on "None But The Brave." Another great combination. "Captain Midnight"
is a great head-bopping Rock track, and the last track has Trower in his great blues form, "Settling The Score."
Chrysalis Records may have dropped Trower after this release, but don't call Trower out. He still remains one of Rock's greatest
guitar players. And James Dewar is one of the best Rock vocalists to back up one of Rock's finest guitarists. The Back It Up
title suits it well. Both Trower and Dewar keep backing up what they know is best -- creating great Rock music. Both Trower and Dewar
wrote or co-wrote all the songs. (Trower mostly was the main writer.) Although by 1983 Trower may not have had any huge hits to remember
by, but still, he is still a force to be reckoned with.
Although Dewar passed away in 2002, Trower still continues to record great music. His latest release was in 2016, Where Are You
Going To. Trower's best years were with James Dewar. Back It Up is another great album featuring the fantastic guitar work
of Trower, and Dewar's incredible voice.
