    Green Day
    "American Idiot"

Green Day makes their debut this week, with their 2004 release, American Idiot. The story goes on this album, is when they were recording the album, originally titled Cigarettes And Valentines, the master tapes were stolen. Instead of re-recording the material for this album, they would start over, and develop what would become American Idiot.

The band declared American Idiot as a "punk rock opera," as it tells the story of Jesus Of Suburbia, a lower-middle-class American adolescent anti-hero. Disillusionment and dissent of a generation that would come of age in a period shaped by tumultous efents, such as the Iraq War. This album would become a "comeback" for Green Day, as their previous album Warning was not as successful as their previous releases. Sespite their success with various songs from their previous albums, American Idiot reached the #1 spot on Billboard's Hot 200 albums chart. "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" was the biggest hit from the album, as well as other hits -- "Jesus Of Suburbia" (which was part of a 9-minute track, consisting of 5 songs throughout). The title track was another radio favorite, as well as "Holiday" and "Wake Me Up When September Ends."

The first four tracks blend extremely well, making it it's own "rock opera." The title track starts out the album, and you can't help it; being in great rocking form, as it grabs your attention. The 9-minute "Jesus Of Suburbia" is a rock opera song in its own form, conssting of 5 song medley: "Jesus Of Suburbia," CIty Of The Damned,""I Don't Care'," "Dearly Beloved," and "Tales Of Another Broken Home." "Holiday" and "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" follows, in exceptional form.

Are We The Waiting" sounds different (?) or did it slow the pace a bit from the first 4 tracks... Yet "St. Jimmy" returns back to the Rock-yet-it-is-Punk, as Green Day takes it to the top, as they always have. Slowding down the pace (compared to the other tracks) is the "Give Me Novacaine." This song is great, with it's easy, not as rocking style, yet it has its powerful rock choruses throughout. "She's A Rebel" continues the powerful Rock-and-Punk greatness.

"Extraordinary Girl" starts out as more of a World Music piece, but it then kicks it in Rock-and-Punk Green Day style. "Letterbomb" keeps the traditional Green Day sound (Rock-and-Punk) continuing. "Wake Me Up When September Ends" is another beautiful track, more of a ballad. "Homecoming" is another "rock opera" tune, consisting of 5-song medley: "The Death Of St. Jimmy," "East 12th St.," "Nobody Likes You," "Rock And Roll Girlfriend" and "We're Coming Again." A traditional "hard rocking" Green Day medley, defining more of the Punk Rock style, as in the Ramones. Ending the album is "Whatsername," (What's Her Name), a grooving, head-bopping tune. And again, another very good track.

Green Day's is considered a "rock opera," as it is definitely a great Rock/Punk album. Punk Rock in a harder rock form. Punk Rock in a style that Green Day has declared of their own. "True Punk" ? The Sex Pistols' Johnny Lydon disagrees. The Sex Pistols definitely broke the barrier of how Punk Rock really sounded like. However, Green Day put their own signature on Punk Rock music. So did The Ramones. So did Oasis. Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong's voice has similarities of that of the Sex Pistols, and even so of the band Oasis. And some of Green Day's music can be compared to The Ramones.

Despite having the original album they were working on was stolen, it proved to be a blessing in disguise -- They started over, and recorded new songs for American Idiot, an album that is truly a great album, and a must for any Rock and/or Punk Rock fan. Green Day may have had other big hits before this album, yet this "rock opera" album proved to us that they could develop an incredible album, from start to finish. They did just that, and they earned this album to become a #1 album in their history and career. Being compared to other great bands such as The Sex Pistols, Oasis and The Ramones are compliments for some, yet Green Day is in a class of themselves. Like any other musical artist, you like them, or you don't. Green Day proved, despite their own controversies (which they had, like others did), that they can make themselves stand out as yet another great band. A Rock and Roll band? Yes, but more of a "true Punk" band, as they definied themselves as. Punk. Punk Rock. Green Day.
