Bobby Darin "This Is Darin"
Bobby Darin first debuted with a two-fer of his later releases here on WSVnRadio,
Oh Look At Me Now/Hello Dolly To Goodbye Charlie. He returns
this week, with an album from his peak years, his 1960 release, This Is Darin. Showcasing in the best in Big Band Jazz, Darin does it well in
his own preferable style. Sinatra, Bennett comparisons, yet Bobby Darin recorded songs in his own special way. If he had lived, he would have been
as popular as Tony Bennett -- continuing of recording the standards from the pre-Rock and Roll era. And with Rock and Roll, Darin would put his own
spin on certain tunes in a Rock and Roll style.
Take the opening track, his version of "Clementine." It's jazzy, it's rock and roll. I had the vinyl 45 when I was younger, and even today,
his version never loses style. It is one of my favorite Darin tunes.
The rest of the album definitely has the sound that Tony Bennett would have recorded in his much later years, even today. Bobby Darin was a star
in the making. "Have You Got Any Castles, Baby," "My Gal Sal," "Caravan" all have the (future) Bennett atmosphere. But, it's Bobby Darin --
with his unique style of his own, adding his ad-libs and the swining Big Band/Jazz just has all the components of a great entertainer.
Sinatra'ish (and Bennet'ish too) gets "Dont Dream Of Anybody But Me," "Black Coffee." The Big Band standards "Guys And Dolls," "Down
With Love." And there's the traditional Jazz (the standup bass gets the attention here), "Pete Kelly's Blues" has the sound of hearing this
song played in a smokey lounge, with just a touch of a blues feel. This is outright great Jazz. More great Jazz, happy-go-lucky "All Nite Long."
This is Jazz, this is Rock and Roll. This is Darin> "The Gal That Got Away" and "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" are the
standard Jazz classics. Sinatra, Bennett did it, as others from the Big Band Jazz era.
Bobby Darin was so talented, giving his own style on what would be great Jazz standards. We can only imagine how he would be today. He passed away
on December 20, 1973, 37 years old. He had always had heart problems throughout his entire life. He died during heart surgery, on the operating table.
Bobby Darin was the true inspiration for me, to become a singer. He, along with singing along with Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons records, kept my own
singing "in tune."
This Is Darin is a great album of great Jazz standards. Bobby Darin made it even better, in his own style. Thank you Bobby, for all of your
music. You have left behind a great legacy of music, that has inspired many. He may be gone, but never forgotten. I will always be a fan, and look
forward in reviewing more of his music.
