Country singer Daryle Singletary's self-titled debut album from 1995 gets the nod, and for those who never heard of him, his hit "Too Much Fun" was
getting heavy radio airplay. He recorded a total of 7 albums before his unexpected death in 2018, at the young age of 46. Back in 1996, Country was Country.
And Singletary's album definitely defines Country music, both musically and the album's song titles.
"Too Much Fun" starts the album, and it was a huge, huge hit. And the "fun" continues with a great Country and Western song title -- "I'm Living Up
To Her Low Expectations." The next track is a nice smooth-sounding balladlike - "There's A Cold Spell Movin' In." His voice has a George Jones like
quality about it. "Ordinary Heroes" keeps the Classic Country sound continuing. And another great Country title is another nice balladlike tune --
"I Let Her Lie." This song would be his biggest hit, reaching #2. (However, "Too Much Fun" reached #4, and is my personal favorite song by him.)
"A Love That Never Died" has a Randy Travis influence, and to mention, Randy Travis was one of the 3 co-producers for this album.
is another great balladlike track, as this album keeps getting better and better. Then there's some great Country honky-tonkin' with (another great Country title)
"My Heart's Too Broke (To Pay Attention)." And with the next title, it should be a great song to dance slow to, at one of those country taverns --
"Would These Arms Be In Your Way." Ending the album is "What Am I Doing There," another great true Country tune.
Daryle Singletary's debut album does have "Fun," and throughout, it is a "too much fun" album to listen to. I never did hear any future songs by him from his
remaining albums of his career, as I never really followed Country music from the 1990s decade during that time. That is something I wished I had followed, as there
were many great country artists, and their songs.
Daryle Singletary left us way too soon in 2018, as the cause of death was unknown. He left behind his wife and four children. After listening to his self-titled
album, you definitely want to hear more. 6 more albums of his, and a best of, which included new tracks. He had a great voice for Country. And if you're looking for
good old fashioned Country music, Daryle Singletary would be a great artist to discover. His influences are all there - Merle Haggard, Randy Travis, George Jones,
and many more. He easily blended with the other popular Country artists of the 1990s decade, as he continued recording throughout the 2000 decade. His last album
was released his 2015. Such a great talent, gone too soon.
