Mercyful Fate (with King Diamond) returns this week, with their seventh album of their career, 9, released in 1999. 1999 is a number in which this album was selected, as the WSVNRadio Album Pick of the Week, #1999. Mercyful Fate's first review was Don't Break The Oath. With the many dark song title themes, it's the hard rock sound (with the dark lyrics) that makes the album ROCK in its own form, and especially for fans of this dark music nature.
"Last Rites" begins the album, with it's fast sound, black metal, or speed metal. "Church Of Saint Anne" kis quite good; it has a great hard rock sound, loud vocals, huge guitars. "Sold My Soul" again, defines the hard, dark rock sound Mercyful Fate is known for. "Speed Metal" Rock returns with "House On The Hill." "Burn In Hell" is simply put - hard rock, loud, brash. "The Grave" starts out not as rough, but eventually, yes, it kicks into hard rock fashion. And more of that loud, brash hard rock has "Insane." It's all that, and weird. "Kiss The Demon" starts out slowly, and yes, again, it creeps into hard rock glory, and returns back into slow, and rocks again. Quite interesting. Metallica fans will like "Buried Alive," (as many of the songs heard on 9 are Metallica'ish in sound). The title track ends the album, as it is mysterious throughout - having its hard rock sound, dark in nature. And, it also compares to Alice Cooper, during his more harder rock years.
9 by Mercyful Fate is another adventure in hard, loud music, with it's dark themed lyrics. It's sound can be compared to the early Metallica, yet Mercyful Fate kicks it into more harder rock than ever. Black Metal, Speed Metal, Hard Rock, it's all there. 9 would be the band's last studio album. King Diamond would have his own solo career. As mentioned in the previous Mercyful Fate review, they are not for everyone, but for those who enjoy this kind of hard rock, Mercylful Fate is powerful in sound, and their lyrics are dark, adding to their loud sound.
