"Yowsah, Youwsah, Yowsha" ... That was the chant heard in 1977, when the Disco group Chic emerged with "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)." It was from the group's debut album. (Risque was previously revewed. Chic was formed by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers. The group included female singer Norma Jean Wright, who would appear on the debut album. She would join the group Sister Sledge ("We Are Family,") and was replaced in Chic by Alfa Anderson on Chic's second album, C'est Chic. Anderson and another female singer, Luci Martin appeared on Chic's third album, Risque. The two females on the album cover of Chic were two models, Valentine Monnier and Alva Chinn.

The original Chic album would contain the long version of "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsha)" with its extended Disco instrumental grooves. "Sao Paulo" is more R&B than Disco, and it's instrumentation is superb, almost Jazz sounding. It's a beautiful instrumental. "You Can Get By" returns to the Disco grooves, with Bernard Edwards on lead vocal (or is it Luther Vandross? He was credited as a vocalist on the album). "Everybody Dance" is another true Disco sounding track. Likewise, "Est-Ce Que C'Est Chic." ("C'Est Chic" would be the title of Chic's second album). "Falling In Love With You" is a pure R&B soulful track, with Norma Jean Wright on lead vocals. Ending the album is "Strike Up The Band," a funky and cool Disco track.

Chic showcases great Disco, R&B and Soul. Their next two albums would have one popular song for each: "Le Freak" (from C'est Chic) and "Good Times" (from Risque). They would release 6 more studio albums, from 1980 to 2018. Bernard Edwards passed away in 1996, age 43. At the time, he and Rodgers were participating in Japanin "J.T. Super Producers '96." Edwards was not feeling well, and retired to his hotel room, but was later found dead by Rodgers. The cause of death was pneumonia. Chic has been nominated eleven times for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but has yet to receive enough votes to become an inductee. It's amazing that they aren't, and listening to Chic's debut album makes you wonder why they're not. Chic's debut is a must to listen to, for those who enjoy Disco music, and R&B.
