If you enjoy the music of the 1970s, one of the many popular hits from that decade, was Chi Coltrane's "Thunder And
Lightning." (It was a song from the compilation album Ronco's Good Vibrations). "Thunder And Lightning"
could just be a one-hit wonder, yet Collectables released a 13-song set of Chi Coltrane's music. Actually, her original
self-titled debut album and two songs from her second album (Let It Ride are the songs on this Collectables set.
(The Collectables album cover is from her first album.) She released a total of three albums in the 1970s, four in the
1980s.
"Thunder And Lightning" is the first track, and for those who remember this one, it was truly a great songs from
a great decade of music - The 1970s. "Goodbye John" is a ballad, and having that common sound of the 1970s, ballad
and all. "You Were My Friend" is another good Pop-sounding track. "Turn Me Around" is another nice ballad.
(There are parts in this song that reminds me of Diana Ross' "Touch Me In The Morning.") "Go Like Elijah"
is a ROCKER! It has a sound that could have been part of the Hair broadway musical and/or movie. It also has a
gospel style to it. (It was a #1 hit in the Netherlands.) "The Tree" returns as another nice ballad. This one has
a ballad style heard from another musical, Jesus Christ Superstar.
"Feelin' Good" easily describes this song as it's title - It's a good Rock track. "It's Really Come To
This" is another ballad, and resembles that of a Carly Simon ballad. Harry Chapin's "Taxi" comes to mind on the
nice Pop-driven "I Will Not Dance." "Time To Come In" is another (yes, you guessed it), a (Carly Simon'ish) ballad.
And yes, another ballad on the next track, "Who Ever Told You." (Very mellow and moody). "Who Ever Told You"
is a great Rock song! It could even pass as Rock/Blues. Ending the album is another ballad, "Myself To You."
Ballads seem to be the focus on this Chi Coltrane compilation. The more Rock songs are just as good. Chi Coltrane's
debut album was released in 1972, and the Rock songs on this set, you could almost imagine the direction that Janis Joplin
may have taken. (She passed away a year earlier, 1971.) "Thunder And Lightning" is the standout track, yet the other
songs (especially the ballads) shows how Miss Coltrane's voice can make each ballad exceptional.
Chi Coltrane will be 75 on November 6. In 1993, she built a recording studio and worked with underpriviledged goups.
In 2009, she resumed her music career with a new song, "Yesterday, Today And Forever." It was part of a new compilation
of her music, entitled The Essential Chi Coltrane - Yesterday, Today And Forever. She acclaimed popularity outside
the U.S., in Europe. During the 1970s and 1980s (in U.S.) she was dubbed as "The First Lady Of Rock," "Queen Of Rock" and
"Top Female Artist." To my recollection, I had never heard of these "titles." I was only familar with that so-called
one-hit wonder, "Thunder And Lightning." from the Ronco's Good Vibrations album. But after hearing more of
her music on Golden Classics it's easy to hear how talented she was, and her focus in music in general, by having
a recording studio for others, and returning to music with a new song, and new compilation.
