Gordon Lightfoot returns this week, with his 1975 release, Cold On The Shoulder. There aren't real "standout" hits from this album, such as (from my knowledge) "Sundown," "If You Could Read My Mind," "Carefree Highway," "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald." However, one song, "Rainy Day People" (which was a popular hit), I have heard on oldies channels (preferably, Sirius XM's 70s on 7). Yet, with his music, I'm sure this album is just as appreciative as his others. And recently, he passed away last year, on May 1, 2023, of natural causes. He was 84 years old.

"Bend In The Water" has a definite old-fashioned Country style. "Rainy Day People" is next, as it is just as great as Lightfoot's laid back memorable hits. "Cold On The Shoulder" is another good song, with a very happy-go-luck feel. "The Soul Is The Rock" is another pleasant sounding tune, folkish, and can relate in sound of another well-known folk artist, John Denver.

The piano is the main instrument heard on "Bells Of The Evening." It's simply a beautiful song. "Rainbow Trout" is another good song, with "the common sound of Gordon Lightfoot." Like many songs, the acoustic guitar is the main instrument. Nice harmonies too. "A Tree Too Weak To Stand" has the John Denver style, another good one. The folk style has "All The Lovely Ladies," and it's another "common sound of Gordon Lightfoot," a great sound.

"Fine As Fine Can Be" has a more spiritual sound. It is perfect for Gordon Lightfoot, more than just Fine. "Cherokee Bend" has a more of a "Western Country" sound. It's a little different than your common GL sound. Again, it fits. "Now And Then" is another common GL song, and ending the album is "Slide On Over," as it has a cool grooving sound, Country'ish.

Gordon Lightfoot's Cold On The Shoulder has all the great sounds of Folk and Country. And he had always a distinctive and recognizable voice. Lightfoot's biographer Nicholas Jennings said, "His name is synonymous with timeless songs about trains and shipwrecks, rivers and higways, lovers and loneliness." He continued to tour, until mid-April 2023. To keep in shape for the tours, he worked out in the gym, six days a week. He declared in 2012, the he was "fully prepared to go whenever I'm taken. I've been almost dead a couple times, once almost for real... I have more incentive to continue now because I feel I'm on borrowed time, in terms of my age." His bandmembers displayed their loyalty to him, as both musicians and friends, recording with him as long as 45 years. He was married three times, with a total of 6 children. 4 from his marriages, and 2 from other relationships. In the 1970s, he was also involved with Cathy Smith, who would become "famous" for injecting John Belushi with a fatal speedball.

He may have left us, but his music will always be enjoyed forever.
