Annette Funicello was everyone's favorite Mouseketeer. And when she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1987,
you couldn't help but feel sad for her. I had the 45 single of her hit, "Tall Pall" and the B-side was "Ma, He's
Making Eyes At Me." Jasmine Records does it again, with another 2-disc set of an artist's music. Annette's 2-disc
First Name Initial compiles 51 of her chart hits and more. And both songs mentioned are included. For those who
remember her, she was also famous for her Beach movies, with Frankie Avalon. (Frankie is still with us, however, Annette
passed away from MS on April 8, 2013. She was 70 years old.)
Disc One: "Tall Paul" leads off the compilation, being her most-known hit. "My Heart Becomes Of Age"
is another great tune, and was the B-side to "Especially For You." It was also the B-side to "First Name
Initial," as this B-side could easily have been a hit itself. It was also the B-side to"Don't Jump To
Conclusions" was the B-side to her first single, "How Will I Know My Love." Another B-side follows, "Lonely
Guitar," the A-side was "Jo Jo The Dog Faced Boy." "It Took Dreams" was the B-side to "O Dio Mio." "Wild
Willie" was the B-side to "Lonely Guitar." The B-side of "Tall Paul" is next, "Ma, He's Making Eyes
At Me," another great tune.
"That Crazy Place In Outer Space" was Annette's second (A-side) single. It would also be re-released years
later. "Love Me Forever" was another (later) B-side for "Jo Jo The Dog Faced Boy." "Jo Jo" has the same
feel as "Tall Paul," yet Love Me Forever" has a better sound than that of "Jo Jo." "Train Of Love"
was another A-sided hit, and it's quite a rock & roll tune. "Teddy" wasn't a single, it was an album track from
her album Annette/Annette Sings Paul Anka. Likewise, "I Love You," "Hey Mama," "I Love You Baby," "Lonely
Girl," "Like A Baby," "Talk To Me Baby," "Tell Me That You Love Me," "Waiting For You," "It's Really Love" and
"And So It's Goodbye" were all from that album. (Those songs, alsong with "Train Of Love" were all from the
Annette/Annette Sings Paul Anka album.) "Lonely Girl" is the female version of Paul Anka's "Lonely
Boy." (Jasmine Records have included ALL songs from an album in their compilations.)
Disc Two begins with all 12 songs from her album Hawaiinette - Annette Sings Songs Of Hawaii (1960):
"Hawaiinette," "Pineapple Princess," "Hukilau," "Blue Hawaii," (Elvis recorded this one), "Song Of The Islands,"
"Now Is The Hour," "Date Night In Hawaii," "Blue Muu Muu," "Luau Cha-Cha-Cha," "My Little Grass Shack," "Holiday In
Hawaii," "Aloha Oe." "My Little Grass Shack" is JAZZY! GREAT!
The next 12 songs were from another album from 1960, Italiannette. (Yes, 12 ITALIAN songs): "Italiannette,"
"Please Please Signore," "Gotta Lotta Love," "Mia Cara Mia Amore," "Lucky Lucky," "Love Me Forever," "Dream Boy," "O Dio
Mio," "That's Amore," "Where's The Spumoni," "Vieni Vieni," "There's No Tomorrow,"
"First Name Initial" was a recognizable song, that I remember. It was a hit single from the year 1959. The
last two songs were single versions - "O Dio Mio" and "Train Of Love." (All the songs from this compilation
were recorded in the years 1958 to 1960.)
Annette's First Name Initial is an excellent compilation of her music. 3 complete albums are included here -
Annette/Annette Sings Paul Anka, Hawaiinette and Italiannette. Speaking of Italian, Annette's songs
could be compared to another Italian singer, Connie Francis. And as for Paul Anka, Neil Sedaka's songwriting comes to
mind on some of the songs in this compilation. Annette had great music, and although "Tall Paul" may have been
the only song that really comes to mind, it's great to discover the other songs/hits that she had. She may no longer
be with us, but she left behind great music to enjoy and discover.
