Trent Reznor (aka Nine Inch Nails) Pretty Hate Machine achieved a catchy hit, "Head Like A Hole." NIN's music is true pure Industrial; and not for everyone's ears. Reznor would make controversial and interesting music throughout his career. After two more releases (Broken and The Downard Spiral that would be more popular in the underground industrial outlets, his next release in 1999, The Fragile would be his first double-disc set, and it would become his first #1 album on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart. (His next #1 album would follow after Fragile, With Teeth. Truly experimental, truly Industrial, The Fragile showcases hard-hitting music, rough-edged, in-your-face, loud, and truly defines Industrial, hard rock/alternative rock music.

    First Disc: LEFT

The 2-disc set hits it off with the pure Industrial hard rocking "Somewhat Damaged." "The Day The World Went Away" is also loud sounding, yet experimental. "The Frail" is a short instrumental, having a somewhat classical sounding style. "The Wretched" returns to the pure hard rock Industrial style, likewise "We're In This Together" also has the pure Industrial/hard rock style.

The title track has an eerie, slow sound -- horror movie music -- as many of the songs on the first disc could easily fit these kinds of soundtracks. The instrumental "Just Like You Imagined" continues as experimental. "Even Deeper" is not as loud (in some places), yet it's eerie, and has a more Alternative Rock style. "Pilgrimage" is loud industrial music, as heard in the German band Laibach, and could also be part of a horror flick soundtrack. "No You Don't," like the first disc's opener, is also another pure hard rock Industrial number. "La Mer" quiets the atmosphere for a bit, and the first disc's last track also could fit a horror flick soundtrack, "The Great Below."

    Second Disc: RIGHT

Continuing with "horror flick soundtrack music," the second disc's opener, "The Way Out Is Through." "Into The Void" and "Where Is Everybody" are other pure Industrial songs that could easily be hits on the Industrial radio playlists. Horror movie music continues with "The Mark Has Been Made," "Please" is a pretty cool Alternative/Industrial Rock song. "Starfuckers, Inc." would be a collaboration with Marilyn Manson, and again, another pure Industrial rock styled song, as it leads into another hard-driving song, "Compilation." "Im Looking Forward To Joining You," is an another eerie-sounding song, and for horror movie soundtracks.

The remaining songs, "The Big Come Down," "Underneath It All," and "Ripe (With Decay)" all have the styles of pure Industrial, experiemental, horror movie soundtrack appeal.

Nine Inch Nails' The Fragtile is certainly NOT for everyone. It's experimental music, it's pure hard rock Industrial. It easily fits music for horror movies. Yet, as "interesting" and highly un-boring, Nine Inch Nails is rough, tough, in-your-face rock, with a vengence.
