Starflyer 59 is an American alternative rock band from Riverside, California that was founded in 1993 by Jason Martin (brother of Joy Electric's Ronnie Martin). While Jason has written nearly all of the band's songs, the band has included a number of different musicians over the years, including Jeff Cloud, Frank Lenz, and Richard Swift. The band's sound was initially identified as an outgrowth of the shoegaze movement of the early 1990s, but the band's music has gradually evolved to the point of little resemblance to that of its early days. Gold was their second album, released in 1995. This album is considered instrumental in devloping the "shoegaze" sound. Lyrically, the album continued the trend of somewhat depressive and lovelorn content in contrast to the message of the band's Christian record label (Tooth & Nail). As with their first album Silver, the title of their second album matches the color of the album's cover. As of 2024, the band has released a total of 16 studio albums, and 9 EPs, 1 split EP, 5 live albums, and numerous 12-inch singles and 7-inch singles, 3 box sets, and apparances on other compilations. Jason Martin has remained the original band member, despite many personnel changes.

"A Housewife Love Song" kicks off the album, with it's powerful Alternative Rock style and energy. "Duel Overhead Cam" could easily have been recorded by Nirvana. The sound of this song could be used in a James Bond soundtrack. Likewise, the Alternative (Hard) Rock continues with "When You Feel Miserable." "You're Mean" has a somewhat surf sound with the Alternative Rock sound. Loud Alternative gets the next track, "Stop Wating Your Whole Life/Messed Up And Down." A moody and eerie style has the next song, "Messed Up Over You" (Pink Floyd'ish). "When You Feel The Mess" is even more stranger than the previous track, just strange. (The previous track is better than this one; it's the Pink Floyd'ish sound that makes it the better of the two.) However, "Somewhere Where Your Heart Glowed The Hope" is quite good, defining the common Alternate Rock category. This song is easily compared to the Smashing Pumpkins. "Indiana" is also another "quite well" track, comparing to the Smashing Pumpkins. "Did You Eve Feel That Way" is another good Alternative Rock track. Ending the album is "One Shot Juanita," a more laid-back approach sounding tune.

The 1990s decade introduced "Grunge" music, with bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam leading the way. Starflyer 59 was one of those Grunge bands, yet you probably never heard of them. The Alternative Rock style is heard throughout the album, to add StarFlyer 59 to that list of '90s Grunge bands. Gold is a good Grunge album, and those who enjoy the sound of Grunge will enjoy Gold. With their many studio albums and more, the band has evolved with the musical times. Gold has the distinctive grunge sound, and fans of other well-known grunge bands, such as those mentioned - Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins - they just may want to explore Starflyer 59's other albums, as they were released throughout the next 3 decades.
