From The Goodwill Collection...
Less Than Jake is a ska punk band from Gainesville, Florida. They have released a total of nine studio albums, from
1995 - 2020. This week, Less Than Jake debuts witha compilation album, Goodbye Blue And White, released in 2002.
All of the tracks from Goodbye Blue And White are previously released on out of print and limited edition vinyl.
The title of this compilation was based on the purchasing of a 1979 Chevy named Blue and White, located at Ocala,
Florida's Sunlight Motors (1979). Vocalist/Bass/Guitars Roger Lima convinced his mother for a loan for $3,000, telling her
it was for "school." Wrong. The Blue and White Chevy was bought for $3,000, and after inspection ($170), the Chevy van
was not ready for the road. A month later, the car was ready for the road. Interesting story in the liner notes about the
van, as it travelled from April, 1995 to March, 1997.
Starting the album is "I Think I Love You" (Yes, the Partridge Family remake) - It's a fast-paced Punk Rock
styled track, way different than the original. "Losing Streak" continues the fast-paced Punk Rock style, (Is
that horns I hear? Interesting.) "Mixology Of Tom Collins" keeps the Punk Rock style going. (It's quite good,
for it's Punk style.) "Modern World" has grit and fire, Punk Rock style. "Yo-Yo Ninja Boy" is a rocker,
in it's own way - Punk and Rock. The horns return (?) on "Doepman (Remix)," another good Rock-er.
"Rock-N-Roll Pizzeria (7 Inch Version)" is definitely another fast-paced Punk Rock track, defining the true
Punk style. "We're Not Gonna Take It" (the Twisted Sister remake), is another fast-paced Punk track, and way
different than the original, of course. "Son Of Dick" sounds like a track that the band had fun recording.
It's fast-paced of course, and sounds fun. "Teenager In Love" (the Dion & The Belmonts remake), yes, another
different sound than the original. It's Punk. "Freeze Frame" (the J. Geils Band remake), another different
sound than the original. "Your Love" (the Outfield remake) - another true Punk Rock styled track, and different
than the original.
"Scott Farcas Takes It On The Chin" - has the horns, and the classic Punk sound, likewise, "Desdcant" -
the Punk Rock sound is there. "Evil Has No Boundaries" - this one is LOUD, it's Speed-Thrash (Metal) Punk.
"Anti-Christ" (with a title such as this, it's definitely another LOUD, Speed-Thrash (Metal) Punk. "Cheez
7 Inch Version)" has the fast speed-thrash, with some ska music in various places, a mix of punk and ska.
"Mississippi Mud" has more fast-paced vocals, and a short horns at the end; no music. "Hamburger Hop"
is more of snappy jazzy swing. Ending the album is "KROG Song," KROG for the California radio station (?).
Sounding like a promo from the band, for the station.
For the Punk Rock fans, Less Than Jake's Goodbye Blue And White is a good compilation. The classic Punk Rock
sound is heard throughout the album. The speed-thrash tracks maybe the least to enjoy, yet all of the songs are quite
short, no more than a little than over two minutes in length. Towards the end of the album, the tracks are very short,
being 30 seconds or less. Goodbye Blue And White can be compared to The Sex Pistols, and the likes of speed-thrash
Punk bands. Punk Rock may not be for everyone, but if you enjoy it, Less Than Jake's Goodbye Blue And White
can be an album to listen to, as a getaway from other genres of music for you.
