Most Country artists started out singing Gospel songs, and/or had a desire to record gospel eventually. Elvis did it, Johnny Cash, and many more. The Statler Brothers debut this week, with their Gospel album, Holy Bible: The Old Testament.

ONCE UPON A TIME we had an idea for a gospel album. That was eight years ago. Eight years ago the first song was written for it and we thought the wheels were in motion. But evidently the time wasn't right because circumstances didn't allow us to finish it until now. Looking back, we wonder how we ever ould have thought we could put this album together in the time we had originally allowed ourselves.
While working on other projects, albums, stage shows, and recording sessions, we spent our spare time over the last eight years reading, studying, talking about, and learning the Bible. We asked questions, to other people and ourselves. We listened; to other people and each other. We all grew up in Christian homes thinking we knew the Bible, but as we began getting into it a little deeper we found out there was more to the Book than we had learned in Sunday School.
We began to see the characters in the stories as human beings. We began to realize they had the same problems, temptations, fears, and doubts that you and I have. They were concerned with taxes, diseases, politics, wars, slavery, finances, family problems, social problems, crime... the same things that concern you and me today.
We're asking you to join us in meeting these people, Make friends with them and get to know them. Look at them with a little less awe and a little more human understanding. Take them off the pedestal and put them on the street. Regard them with less adulation and more appreciation. Don't look at them with your mouth open but with your mind open.
The one point we want to make with this album is that these people were human. What they did, you can do. God used them as He saw fit, as He may very well be using you if you let Him.
Now Jesus is another story. He was man and He is God so He knows the worst of this world and the best of the other. Our whole way of life is to work for something we want. To save our money and then buy it. To do something for someone so they'll do something for us. And anytime someone gives us something we have to wonder if they want something in return. But God gave us something we can't work for and earn, we can't save for and buy, and we don't have to worry about returning the favor. Jesus was a gift. The greatest Christmas gift of all time. One you can't buy or earn. Just accept it and you're home free.
This project has taken more time and been closer to our hearts than any we have ever undertaken. And there are a lot of people who have been a great help. We'd like to thank our Moms and Dads who instiled in us a need to believe, all our Sunday School teachers from the Toddlers' class on up and who told us the Bible stories, our ministers who gave those stories more meaning, and a very special friend, Jack Young, whose wisdom, knowledge, and interest in what we were trying to do made this album a reality for us.
And while we're at it we'd like to thank each other for the patience, criticism, tolerance, understanding, and help that was expressed through the long and enjoyable period of putting this work together.
    THE STATLER BROTHERS

The Old Testament: The first part of the Christian Bible that tells about the Jews, their history, and God's words to them in the time before Jesus Christ was born.

The Statlers' The Old Testament (as well as The New Testament) were both released in 1975. They had released Gospel albums previously. What makes The Old Testament album great, is how they refered to each song from the Bible. Each song begins with a short reading from the Bible. "In The Beginning" is the only exception. As they read about God, Adam, Eve, Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Israel. The Statlers have always been best known for their vocal harmonies. With that, and Gospel and Country music combined, The Old Testament surely defines great music.

Spiritually, each song is incredibly beautiful, with its references to the Bible. Musically, it is great Country. The best to compare musically would be the music of Merle Haggard. Another great comparison, is to Bill Gaither, and his incredible work he has done with his wife, and The Gaither Vocal Band.

The Statler Brothers have always recorded great music, whether it be Country (which they were most famous for), and Gospel. The Old Testament is a fine album to relax to, and admiring the lyrical contents to the Bible. You just may want to grab your own Bible, and find the readings the songs are referred to. Better yet, read the Bible regularly. Christian/Gospel music should be listened to and enjoyed more. Maybe it doesn't really get the recognition it deserves trhoughout the many past decades. It should. Discover great Gospel music with Holy Bible: The Old Testament by The Statler Brothers. The New Testament will be reviewed at a later date.
