Sinead O'Connor -- a very controversial artist, even from her beginnings. She is
famous for two things: (Positive note) She would achieve a huge #1 hit, "Nothing
Compares 2 U," written by Prince. Her second infamous event occurred, when she
appeared on Saturday Night Live in 1992, when she appeared as the musical guest.
During her a cappella version of Bob Marley's "War, she held up a picture of Pope
John Paul II, and deliberately ripped up his picture, claiming he was "evil."
This obviously stirred a major controversy, in which afterwards, she was booed at a
Bob Dylan tribute concert. Even from the beinning, her shaved head drew concerns,
and no, she was NOT the acress who appeared in the first Star Trek movie of
from 1979. I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got became her second album of her
career, released in 1990. As controversial as she looked, her songs have been from
personal experiences, most especially being an abused child while growing up.
Most of the songs (musically) contained on this week's review can be compared to
the likes of Enya. The first track definitely has an Enya atmosphere, "Feel So
Different." As Enya's music is in a calm, peaceful fashion, "Three Babies"
has this setting, yet some of O'Connor's vocals extends more, rather than that of
Enya's. Another calm setting is the accoustic feel of "Black Boys On Mopeds."
Another accoustic calming tune is "The Last Day Of Our Acquaintance."
Enya's self-titled album comes to mind on the title track, as it has a haunting
style, and that of a Gregorian Chant style/effect.
Musically in the sense of Pop/Rock, Madonna's "Justify My Love" comes
to mind while listening to "I Am Stretched On Your Grave." "The Emperor's
New Clothes" has a more upbeat Pop sound, while "Jump In The River" has a
more Rock to Pop approach. Moody, yet easy-styled Pop has "You Cause As Much
Sorrow."
I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got definitely is different, as the name of
the first track. Even observing some of the remaining song titles, they tend to
make this album unique, both musically and lyrically. Sinead O'Connor definitely
sets a different mood atmosphere, even as controversial she would later become, after
the release of this album. She has recorded extensively throughout the past decades.
Her SNL appearence may have placed a damper on her future success, yet she still
continues to record.
Controversial is a good way of winding up the review of I Do Not Want What I
Haven't Got. Although she could say about herself, You Cause As Much Sorrow,
she can also say that she Feels So Different. Maybe even Three Babies
and Black Boys On Mopeds may tell her to go Jump In The River; she will
have her Last Day Of Acquaintance with them, as she observes an Emperor's
New Clothes. Yet maybe sometimes when her sorrow may want to make her Stretched
On Your Grave, Nothing Compares 2 U to make that song her biggest hit. But
in the end, she still can say I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got.
