Like A Virgin was Madonna's second album released in 1984. Her previous album (and debut), the self-titled
Madonna (1983) resulted in three hit singles ("Holiday," "Lucky Star" and "Borderline." But the
song "Like A Virgin" (and her performance of this song on the MTV Music Awards) made her more famous. And from
that moment on, she has always been popular. As suggestive as the "Like A Virgin" (and her MTV performance) was,
she has always been a "interesting" and "controversial" person. The Like A Virgin album resulted in four hit
singles - the title track (obviously), "Material Girl," "Angel," and "Dress You Up." Surpising, only
"Like A Virgin" was a #1 hit from the album (Billboard). However, the album did reach #1 (Billboard). At the
height of MTV, music videos were the focus. Madonna's videos were all outstanding, and was one of many artists who had
their videos on MTV, and likewise, being popular with the MTV audience.
"Material Girl" was the first track, with it's catchy groove, and the Marilyn Monroe comparison video.
Up" is a good Reggae tune. "Angel" is the next track, and from my memory, it wasn't as huge as the other three
hit singles. is a good track though. The title track needs no introduction. It was one of the best songs
from the 1980s decade. It hasn't lost its mystique, decades later. It received the song parody from Weird Al Yankovic,
the funny "Like A Surgeon," and it's video is quite entertaining.
"Over And Over" sure is a Madonna tune, with it's catchy beat, easily fitting her other upbeat songs from her
early career. "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" is truly a great song, and how it wasn't a hit, is beyond me. It's
emotional, and a great ballad. "Dress You Up" is another "no need for introduction" - a huge hit, and one of the
many songs that Madonna fans will always remember.
The remaining songs were album tracks. "Shoo-Be-Doo" starts out as a ballad, then ventures into a very good Pop
sounding track."Pretender" is another Pop number, however, those other three hit singles were better. "Stay"
closes out the album, and it is another good upbeat Pop track.
All the songs on Madonna's Like A Virgin are worth listening to. Of course, the hit singles are the most
remembered, and popular. Those four songs are still being played on various 1980s radio formats. And "Love Don't Live
Here Anymore" is another track worth being played on those stations, and/or "Deep Tracks for the '80s." Madonna is
defintely a Diva, and her music has always been quite enteraining, and in some cases, controversial. Never a dull moment
for Madonna, she did have a health scare recently, and her facial makeup (face lift) has also been "interesting." She
sure doesn't look as pretty as in her prime years, however, it's part of getting older. Did the results of her facelift
become satisfactory to her? Maybe, (or for many), maybe not. Like A Virgin is a great album. It has aged well
throughout the decades since it's release.
