Rainbow returns this week, with Ritchie Blackmore, and Ronnie James Dio -- Long Live Rock 'N' Roll (1978). With it's title, you can guarantee that this is definitely a Rock N Roll album. Blackmore's band prior to Rainbow was Deep Purple, and as I was younger, Deep Purple was more recognized for me than Rainbow was. Rainbow's popular hit, "Since You've Gone" was the song most played on FM radio, but discovering Rainbow's other songs have been a discovery. (Just listen to "I Surrender" from Difficult To Cure. That song is one of the best songs in Hard Rock/Metal/Rock N Roll. (Joe Lynn Turner was the vocalist on that album, and he was also another great vocalist.) Currently, Ritchie Blackmore and his wife Candice Night have formed Blackmore's Night, as of 1997. Ronnie James Dio passed away at the age of 67 in 2010, of stomach cancer.

The title track definitely defines Rock N Roll, as it has a great Deep Purple feel. The next track, "Lady Of The Lake" is even better - great Rock N Roll, where Rainbow's music could also be classified as Metal. Rainbow has their own hard rock/metal sound on this one, and throughout the album. "L.A. Connection" continues that Rainbow sound, and Dio's vocals are also outstanding, proving that he had one of the great voices in Metal. Even on it's another song that defines Dio and Rainbow's unique Hard Rock sound. "Kill The King" does have a similarity to Deep Purple, especially when vocalist David Coverdale was in the band - (Burn.) Speed Metal could also be a comparison to the song also. "The Shed (Subtle)" displays Ritchie Blackmore's guitar in the opening of this song, proving to be another great guitarist to the list of other well-knowns before, during, and after him. "Sensitive To Light" is definitely "Rock N Roll," Rainbow style, hard rock style, Dio. "Rainbow Eyes" ends the album, as it slows down the pace, and in such a great way. Dio's vocals are sweet, this song is a great ballad.

Rainbow's Long Live Rock 'N' Roll lives to it's title. It would be the last album with Dio as vocalist. Dio would later replace Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath. Dio would also emerge having a successful solo career of his own. There weren't any major songs from Long Live Rock 'N' Roll that would be popular as say, "Since You've Been Gone," however, Rainbow's sound on this album equals great Rock N Roll, especially Hard Rock, and Metal. The sound of Deep Purple is there, and Rainbow's own sound. All 8 tracks are superb, and the closing ballad song puts the icing on the cake. Rainbow would continue with a new singer after Dio, Joe Lynn Turner would appear as vocalist on the band's next four albums. Rainbow's last studio album would have another new singer, Doogie White. Long Live Rainbow's music. Long Live Rock 'N' Roll proves it.
