Dream Theater marks their debut this week on WSVNRadio.net, and I really never heard of this band, while they had released many albums throughout their career. However, the talk about them had always been positive. Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band, from Boston, Massachusetts. Formed in 1985, they have released many studio and live albums. This week, one of their live albums get reviewed, Live At The Marquee, released in 1993. The live performance was from The Marquee Club in London, on April 23, 1993. Live At The Marquee was the band's first live album.

"Metropolis" begins the live performance, and it's very powerful, kicking off the beginning of the live album. "Metropolis" was originally from their studio album, Images And Words. It's hard rock/metal, and gets the vocal comparison to (Ronnie James) Dio. The 9+ minute live track has great instrumentation, and as the band breaks into an instrumental part of the track, it resembles the band Rush, from their live performances, and/or the band Yes. It then leads into the next track, "Fortune In Lies" (orginally from the When Dream And Day Unite Demos 1987-1989). It continues the hard rock, mixing both the vocals and instruments (speed metal). "Bombay Vindaloo" is the next track, and it was never on a DT studio album. It's a slow-paced song, and it's probably best to calm things down a bit, during their live concerts. But, as the slow-pace is performed, it gradually increases to the hard rock/metal DT is known for. Another powerful track, live. "Surrounded" (another track from Images And Words, as lead singer James LaBrie tells the audience) - it's a power ballad. And, it's a very good soft tune to start out, and and this song could have easily get radio airplay with their fellow hard rock bands. "Another Hand - The Killing Hand" (also from When Dream And Day Unite),is another powerful live track, 10+ minutes in length. (The original studio track from their debut album is also close to 10 minutes.) "Pull Me Under" (another track from Words And Images) ends the live album, another powerful live track, in sound and vocals.

By 1993, Dream Theater only had two studio albums released: When Dream And Day Unites (1989), and Words And Images (1992). They released 8 more live albums since (1998-2020), and 16 studio albums (1989-2025). Live At The Marquee is certainly a powerful performance. It's live hard rock at its finest. It gets comparisons to Metallica, Dio, and Rush. Although I had never heard of this band, I'm eager to listen to their first two studio albums, of which the songs from the Marquee concert is based from. From reading past reviews, Words And Images was known to be one the band's finest studio albums. Powerful Metal, Dream Theater's music has been categorized as "dense blend of Progressive Rock and post-(Van) Halen metal. Metal. Definitely. Much harder than Van Halen. Progressive Rock has always been defined in my mind, as bands such as Yes, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. (In learning of Dream Theater's influences, both Rush and Yes were in their list.) Dream Theater is much harder than that of the Progressive Rock I am more familiar with. METAL is the definite category to describe Dream Theater's Live At The Marquee. If it's Hard Rock/Metal you're looking for, LIVE, DT's Marquee performance is IT.
