Annie Lennox is most known for her duo act, Eurythmics, with Dave Stewart. As Eurythmics, they achieved greatness with great songs, such as "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)"; their only #1 song. Other great tunes were "Here Comes The Rain Again," "Would I Lie To You," "Thorn In My Side," "Missionary Man." But what most may or may not know, is that Annie Lennox has accomplished a very successful solo career. Her great solo songs include "Put A Little Love In Your Heart" (with Al Green; from the Bill Murray movie, Scrooged), "Why," "No More I Love You's." She has recorded a total of 6 solo albums, and her most recent album, Nostalgia (2014) is an album of cover tunes, mainly from the Great American Songbook. Nostalgia covers tunes from the 1930s, and the 1950s. This album is her third, of cover tunes (Medusa and a Christmas album were the first two). Nostalgia reached #1 on Billboard's Jazz Albums chart.

Annie Lennox breathes new life into each song on Nostalgia, as she puts her own touch on these songs. "Memphis In June" was originally co-written by Hoagy Carmichael, as this song starts out the album, and a song that I really didn't remember. However, her versions of the classics "Georgia On My Mind" (Ray Charles) and "I Put A Spell On You" (Screamin' Jay Hawkins) has Annie reinventing her own touch and sound. Gershwin's "Summertime" (another classic) is superb gold by Annie. She joins the fine list of female performers who also recorded great versions of the song, including Billie Holiday, and Fantasia.

Another song that I didn't remember, is "I Cover The Waterfront." Annie sings it beautifully. "Strange Fruit" (most popular by Billie Holiday), is another great song by Annie, as it has a sound compared to that of Diana Krall. The classic "God Bless The Child" (Billie Holiday, Blood, Sweat & Tears), is classic; Annie (again) puts her own touch on it. Likewise, Jo Stafford's "You Belong To Me" also strikes it rich with Annie's own version, style, and sound.

Another not-so-well-known song (from my knowledge), is the nice and gentle "September In The Rain." Annie makes her own, on the Andrews Sisters' "I Can Dream, Can't I?" Beautiful describes the next track, "The Nearness Of You" is another beautiful song; co-written by Hoagy Carmichael, and another song that I didn't remember. Closing the album, is Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo," as Annie's touch to this song is definitely nostalgic in sound, and most nostalgic than any other song on the album.

The title Nostalgia is what this album is... An album of cover tunes, before Rock and Roll. As usual, Annie Lennox strikes gold on each song, giving them her own style and sound. With Eurythmics and on her own, she has accomplished greatness in her music, and keeps her musical career successful. Recording music since 1981, she still goes strong, even with her recent solo album, Nostalgia. At the age of 64, Annie Lennox keeps going strong. Eurythmics and her solo albums are a must to enjoy.
