Blues Traveler (with John Popper) debuts this week, with their 5th album of their career, Straight On Till Morning. It was the followup to their fourth album, Four. THe Four album pretty much put the band on the map, as their hit "Run-Around" received heavy airplay on the radio. Another memorable event was the appearance of John Popper in the movie The Blues Brothers 2000. Yes, the movie itself was pretty bad, yet the music soundtrack was more excpetional than the movie.

"Carolina Blues" was the first single from the album, as it kicks off the album extremely well, with it's straight Rock (more than Blues) sound. "Felicia" has a different approach about it, it's Rock, yet a different sound than what you've heard from Blues Traveler. Especially from hearing "Run-Around." Maybe it could have been a Dave Matthews song?. Possible, maybe, maybe not. "Justify The Thrill" is better, as it passes the test of either being a good Rock song, or even Alternative. "Canadian Rose" (the album's third single) is a very good track, as Popper's unmistakeable harmonica playing (in the beginning of the song) gets compared to the band's previous hit, "Run-Around." "Business As Usual" is another song like "Felicia," it's different, however it is better than the previous song mentioned that is compared to. "Yours" is completely different. It's quiet, it's pleasant, it's more of a laid-back track. It's good, kinda sounds like a Cat Stevens song. "Psycho Joe" puts the band's sound back to normal. It's a good track, to call itself a "Blues Traveler" song. "Great Big World" is another "lost" track; "not your familiar" Blues Traveler track, however, it's not a bad song, compared to the others. "Battle Of Someone" is definitely a much better Blues Traveler track. Popper sings it quite well on this one. Kinda jazzy too, in his own vocal way. "Most Precarious" gets the "Run-Around" comparison again. It's a good track. (It was the album's second single.) And again, "The Gunfighter" has the "Run-Around" touch, and it's Classic Blues Traveler. "Last Night I Dreamed" gets the Dave Matthews Band comparison (again). Ending the album is the Blues-inspired "Make My Way," a very good track, as Blues Traveler have made better music in the style of the Blues. Maybe this album could have more songs like this one... but I'm not really complaining.

Straight On Till Morning is a good album. There are good songs here, however, there are some better than others. "Run-Around" is really the most memorable song by them for me. In listening to this album, it's quite obvious, that John Popper's harmonica playing is exceptional. And, his singing is quite to mention also. Maybe comparing too much to the "Run-Around" song here, however, give the band credit for the good songs on this album. There are quite a few. Straight On Till Morning is not a Blues album, it's a Rock album. It's Popper's harmonica playing and his singing voice that are the standouts.
